Why aren't oppo posts shared to the FP anymore?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I feel like there used to be a time when oppo posts would occasionally get shared to the FP. Is there a reason that they don’t do it any more? Or did I miss something in my 3 year absence? Or is it cause they got burned by it one time?

If you were wondering the origin of the SR20 rule, here is something that helped create it.

I’m not saying anything I’ve written is FP worthy, I’m just curious what your thoughts are. Is it cause we don’t have to fact check things and we can post whatever we like while possibly violating someone’s copyright by using pictures we found on the internet? What are you guys thoughts?

Probably had something to do with a while back when Jalopnik cast off Oppositelock so that we are no longer affiliated with them. That was within the last year or so.

Yeah IIRC, there were a couple instances of people claiming to be associated with Jalopnik trying to get press cars based on the web address being oppositelock.jalopnik.com. Needless to say Jalopnik did not like.

Because of an issue another masthead (Giz, io9?) had with a FP post they did from another subblog post, which turned out to be straight up plagiarism.

That’s what lead to the separation of subblogs from front pages, and the death of ‘promotion’ to the front page.

They talked about this when oppo was exiled from the jalopnik URL, but they continued sharing stories from oppo for a while after.

I know some people complained about them sharing oppo content, and not paying writers. Maybe the gawker unionization deal had something to do with it.

They’re not sharing the article, because they are rewording the content to pass on as their own.

Seen countless times where I see something on Oppo, then a few minutes later it was a new article by one of the authors.

To be fair, jalopnik needs more shit. Be banned from press events for better things than stuffing camaros into walls. Not half assed orlove shitposting, real investigative shit posting. I think they’d have a field day exploring FCA’s troubles. It’s not like you’d lose out on new cars since they’re just rebadging/crossovering the maser ghiblet.

I’ve asked the powers-that-be, and though they’ve denied an official “Oppo repost ban,” their actions have told a different story. Ironic, considering that the better pieces here have been a free source of extra content during a time when they weren’t generating nearly as much as they used to.

I also wonder if the writers’ union had anything to do with it. I can see why they might object to posting content from unpaid freelancers rather than paying union writers to produce content.

But this is all wild speculation on my part. Other than the denial of an Oppo ban from the FP, I have no facts.

There might not be an official ban or anything, their actions are indicative of an unofficial rule.

If I was the writers’ union I wouldn’t mind the occasional share, especially if it generated new viewers for my permeant writers, as long as it didn’t become the base of the website.

Unless someone from the FP was to actually confirm or deny it, it’s all just speculation.

It was this, at io9, and several instances of literal copy paste plagerism. Hence separation to .Kinja, as others have mentioned. If you plagerism here, jalopnik at least had separation for deniability.
